In the first segment of our three-part series, Managing Workers’ Compensation Injury and Illness Complexities, we will explore the “disability curve” and factors that extend unnecessary disability duration. Strategies to reduce the risk of delayed recovery will be shared, including management of the Provider Initial Report (PIR) and the Activity Prescription Form (APF). The importance of coordinated communication among key players in the management of the work-related injury/illness will be discussed, as well as common barriers to recovery including psychosocial factors and comorbid conditions. Lastly, strategies to obtain injured worker and provider buy-in towards an appropriate return-to-work will be explored.
