Laboratory experiments and demonstrations are an integral and attractive element of quality science education; however, working with hazardous chemicals poses a significant number of risks and challenges. Both Federal and Washington State agencies regulate safety for science laboratories, but as educational entities supporting students, we must take at least two additional steps:
- Adapt industry targeted regulations to the school environment.
- Integrate and continuously implement best practices, as the minimum level of legal compliance is not sufficient to safeguard students and staff while remaining productive.
This session will provide a brief overview of several key areas of laboratory safety, the roles and responsibilities of staff, and relevant regulations. It is designed solely for individuals who are new to this area or those who require additional clarifications in their work with laboratory safety. These additional steps must be developed and tailored to the needs of the individual district and laboratory.
